Honda Australia has no plan to bring the upcoming Integra Type S here, but at least we still get access to another famed nameplate...

The Honda Integra Type S has been ruled out for Australian buyers.

When Honda announced the new Integra Type S, enthusiasts around the world were excited to see the iconic nameplate returning since its last production from 1985 until 2006. Naturally, Honda has been teasing the return of the model leading up to its public debut next month and as it was previously offered for sale Down Under, there was hope it would return.

But in a turn of unfortunate news for Australians, Honda has ruled the model out from arriving locally – at least for the foreseeable future. However, we do still get absolutely stonking Honda Civic Type R which is the pinnacle of performance in Honda’s model line-up.

Both the Integra Type S and Civic Type R will share the same engine, we have now learned. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol motor produces a mighty 235kW and 420Nm of torque and the drive is sent to the front wheels via a slick six-speed manual transmission.

We don’t actually know what the new Integra Type S looks like exactly, but it will be officially unveiled on April 14 at the Long Beach IndyCar Grand Prix this year. Both it and the Civic Type R will be sold alongside each other in the US, where the Type S will be manufactured – hence it is unlikely to ever come in right-hand drive.

Meanwhile, in Australia, Honda is concentrating on its SUV and crossover line-up, which now features hybrid power. Buyers have rejuvenated choices such as the new HR-V, the new-generation CR-V, and the soon-to-be-launched ZR-V. These are sold beside the Civic Type R hot hatch - for those who want something a little more potent.
